Programs

Mowglis offers a diverse program to allow boys to experience a wide variety of activities.

Program Goals:

To provide a safe, fun, and wholesome environment.

To promote exploration, participation, and confidence.

To promote goal-setting and skill development.

To encourage cooperation, respect, and community building.

To build strength of character.

A portion of each day is spent in “Industries” (activities) taught in an individualized setting by a staff member selected for his or her qualifications.

Boys have their choice of activities and may work toward achieving a ribbon acknowledging their accomplishments and skill level.

In addition to Industries, boys have the opportunity to sample other activities. There is a daily “Open Period” when the camp gathers for team games, counselor hunts, capture the flag, or problem-solving and leadership games.

After lunch there is a quiet period, called ‘relax,’ when boys can nap, read, or write home. Each afternoon they go to the Waterfront for a swim, or ‘soak.’

A regular day also requires a bit of work and responsibility from each camper. Boys are expected to care for their personal belongings, share in the work of cleaning their dorm, and perform some duty that benefits the camp community.

The evening campfire gives boys a chance to unwind from the day while taking part in songs or entertainment provided by counselors.

Hiking and Trips
At Mowglis, one day a week is Trip Day. After packing a trail lunch, all boys and staff leave camp on hiking or canoeing trips. Our location in central New Hampshire puts us close to a huge variety of mountains, lakes, and rivers for the boys to explore.

In addition to Trip Day, each dormitory goes on two overnight trips over the course of the summer. Boys 12 and older go on multi-day backpacking trips, and those younger than 12 participate in multi-day base-camp trips. These trip experiences bring boys together as they tackle challenges and face new adventures.

Mowglis is known for building and maintaining over 30 miles of wilderness trails in the Cardigan region. Descriptions of these trails are found in the Appalachian Mountain Club’s White Mountain Guide. The Holt Trail and Elwell Trail are named after our founder and longest-serving Director.

Crew/Rowing

Rowing crew provide boys the opportunity to participate in a uniquely cooperative sport that rewards team effort more than individual skill. Throughout the summer the Crew Coach provides instruction in a unique pair of six-oared, custom-built crew boats.

During Crew Week – the sixth week of camp – the camp is divided into Red and Blue crews, and a week of pageantry and excitement culminates in Race Day. This is one of the most exciting and memorable weeks of camp! Older boys race for speed, and younger boys are judged for their rowing form and unity.
