The Mowglis Way
Please discuss this with your camper:
- Mowglis is a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive community.
- The mission of Mowglis is to develop integrity, empathy, resilience, and leadership – we take this mission very seriously and make every effort to foster an environment conducive to each camper achieving this mission.
- It is important that you and your camper review our Inclusion Statement as well as our Essential Eligibility Criteria before camp starts so we’re all on the same page.
- At Mowglis, we are outspoken believers in the Golden Rule: “Treat others how you’d like to be treated.”
- At Mowglis, we emphasize living with Integrity – Doing the right thing, even if no one is watching or you know you could “get away with it.”
- Together, These principles help form “The Mowglis Way.” We lead with these themes on the first day of camp and return to them countless times throughout the season.
- We work very hard to create an environment where everyone feels welcomed as a member of the Mowglis Pack. To that end:
- We bring outside trainers during our orientation to help prepare our staff to welcome campers from different backgrounds.
- Mowglis is a place of learning and development, and that is the approach we take in guiding and inspiring our campers to be the best versions of themselves.
- We have a team of senior staff members, the Mowglis Fellows, who, along with the camp’s senior leadership, navigate any instances where campers or staff are not being inclusive or welcoming to their fellow Mowglis brothers and sisters. Together, we strive to find the best response to the various situations that may arise during the summer (neither over-reacting nor under-reacting).
- We welcome dialog with parents and guardians, but we also need you to trust us and our judgment when guiding and responding to behavior.
Inclusion at Camp Mowglis
We are committed to creating a diverse environment in which we can all grow and become stronger.
We believe it is our responsibility to help each boy find his best self as he navigates a diverse world both at camp and beyond.
We recognize that diversity of backgrounds, races, cultures, ethnicities, religious beliefs, ideas, abilities, and sexual orientations challenges us and builds strength, confidence, and loving acceptance that can be transferred to the world at large.
We also believe that inclusion is a value best learned in childhood and it is our responsibility to provide a supportive environment in which that learning can occur.
Camp Mowglis Inclusion Statement
Camp Mowglis admits children of any race, religion, sexual orientation, disability (assuming the disability permits safe participation in the Camp Mowglis program), national or ethnic origin to all programs and activities generally accorded or made available to children at the camp. Additionally, Camp Mowglis admits transgender and gender nonconforming children.
Camp Mowglis does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, national or ethnic origin in the administration of its camp-administered programs, educational policies, admission policies, or scholarship programs; nor does it discriminate against transgender and gender nonconforming campers and staff.
Essential Eligibility Criteria
Mowglis strives to welcome campers from a wide array of backgrounds. The health, safety, and welfare of our campers are our top priority. We also want every camper to have a fun, safe, and successful time at camp. To help achieve these goals, we have to be realistic with ourselves and our families about what we can accommodate and what special needs are beyond our capabilities. There’s a camp out there for every child – for Mowglis to be the right fit for your son, he must be able to do the following at a developmentally appropriate level for his age:
- Communicate needs and concerns verbally with others at a conversational level of English
- Understand and comply with directions given by staff
- Refrain from unsafe and/or harmful behaviors toward self and others (including self-harm)
- Identify and avoid health/safety risks
- Feel comfortable living in a rustic, outdoor environment (e.g. no air-conditioning, varying weather conditions, insects/animals, grass/dirt/mud)
- Maneuver rugged terrain and distances
- Follow a varied individual schedule and manage free time
- Assume responsibility for personal hygiene
- Maintain proper nutrition and hydration from the camp menu, which includes non-restrictive, vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free options (we are unable to accommodate special requests or additional food supplements from home)
- Adapt to a group living environment with little time alone
- Demonstrate age-appropriate social and emotional skills in managing personal boundaries, relationships, communication, stress, and conflict
- Manage the sensory stimulation of a frequently large, loud, and energetic group environment (especially in the dining hall during meals)
- Participate fully in all scheduled activities and programs
- Engage in behaviors that contribute to the positive community and spirit of Mowglis
- We are not able to provide an attendant (one-on-one staff member) to address a child’s special needs.
In addition, we are not able to accommodate medical issues requiring treatment beyond the scope of our health center and nurses.
Before enrolling a child with any special needs, please contact us to discuss potential accommodations. If Mowglis ends up not being a good fit for your child, we are happy to connect you with another camp better suited to your son’s needs and interests.
