It’s easy to fall into the trap of hiding indoors after the first cold snap. However, crisp fall weather offers an excellent opportunity to encourage kids to spend more time outdoors following sweltering summer temperatures. Avoid getting stuck in a winter technology rut and stay active in colder weather with these fun activities for boys in the fall.

Fall Leaf Pile Play

Leaders at our boys’ overnight camp program know chores can be fun with the right mindset and a little planning. Fall leaves offer the perfect opportunity to maintain your yard while making memories. Using a rake and bins or a blower, create a leaf pile – or race to create multiple piles and make it a competition. Then, take the plunge before bagging. Judge leaf diving styles, posting a score of 1-10 on a dry-erase or chalkboard. Give the winner an award of a special treat – and bragging rights for next year’s festivities!

Pinecone or Rock Toss

Collect a pile of pinecones for each player. Paint or mark your chosen ammunition with sidewalk chalk, selecting different colors for each child. Then, choose a target. Like bocce ball, whoever gets closest to the target or scores the most direct hits wins. Change up targets to keep it interesting.

Scarecrow Tag

Freeze tag is one of the most popular cold-weather activities for boys. Scarecrow tag offers a few fun modifications: If a player gets tagged, they must freeze with their arms and legs held like a scarecrow. The area under a frozen scarecrow’s legs serves as a safe zone. Bonus: If a player seeking safety crawls through a scarecrow’s legs, they’re freed!

Backyard Camping

One of the most exciting activities at boys’ summer camp is sleeping under the stars – and you can do the same in your backyard. Set up a tent in your backyard or create one using sheets or a tarp held up with chairs, clamps, or tape. Grab sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, and an air mattress if you have one. With the help of an adult, cook a campfire meal or make s’mores, enjoying backyard camping adventures alongside family, friends, and neighbors.

Day Hike

Travel to nearby hiking venues, enjoying the view of colorful fall leaves, spawning salmon, migrating birds, waterfalls, lakes, and more in the beautiful fall weather. You’d be surprised how many things your child can do when it’s cold outside – no snow required!

Fall Farm Visit

Make staying active in cooler weather a family event. Visit a local farm to venture through a corn maze, pick apples or pumpkins, or enjoy a hayride together.
