After a long winter indoors, inspiring kids to unplug and step away from the screen can be a challenge. Kids may have given up on going out in the bitter, dreary weather or have forgotten the backyard activities they used to enjoy. Give them a little encouragement to head back outside and get moving again with these fun activities for boys in the spring from Mowglis overnight summer camp for boys.

Hiking or Nature Walk

Plan a family trip to local hiking trails in scenic areas near lakes, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, forts, and even ghost towns, exploring the wonder and beauty of these sights together.

Color Matching Hike Game

Gather a multicolor set of paint chips for every hiking party group. Include shades you expect to find in nature – and some you don’t – you may be surprised! Search for vibrant shades that match samples as spring colors start to appear. (The winning team picks the treat on the ride home.)

Pond Exploration

Visit a local pond or lake that allows wading, searching for critters near the shoreline like tadpoles, frogs, turtles, worms, water bugs, birds, and other wildlife.

Bird Watching

Look and listen for birds in the backyard, local parks, and nearby nature preserves. Observe on the fly or identify and log them in a kids’ birding journal. Bring kids binoculars for fun, but don’t depend on them, as they have a steep learning curve.

Animal Adventures

Everything’s more fun when animals are involved, from horseback riding and llama treks to goat cuddling. A quick online search may offer multiple options within a short drive. We advise calling first to verify kid-friendly accommodations.

Backyard Camping

Putting up a tent or letting the kids build their own makeshift fort on a nice evening gives kids the rare opportunity to gaze at the moon and stars and experience their backyard at night.

Bike Ride

Layer up and grab a helmet, water, and snacks, heading off to a family-friendly biking trail near you. Bring a bike seat or trailer for toddlers, or divide and conquer, sending one parent to pedal alongside slower tots and another with experienced, older boys to prevent frustration.

Upcycled Garden

Repurpose your outgrown or unused turtle sandbox or kiddie pool into a garden packed full of herbs, fruits, and veggies. Monitor the garden daily, watering, weeding, pruning, and picking as needed to reap your delicious rewards.

Bubble Station

Children of all ages love bubbles. Store-bought bubbles are fast and easy, but homemade options often offer the best performance. Different size options add excitement and variety for older children, while a bubble blower machine may simplify activities with younger boys.

Sidewalk Chalk Adventure

Use sidewalk chalk to help your younger son create a city, amusement park, or racetrack. Then take out his cars and trucks and go for a ride!

Picnic

A few treats, juice boxes, and a picnic mat or blanket are all it takes to turn a simple snack into an outdoor experience, whether in the backyard with family or at a local park with friends.

Jumbo Tik Tac Toe

Nine hula hoops and two different color sets of colorful plastic plates from the local discount store make an excellent backyard game that keeps the kiddos moving.

The Mow-Trow Gear Exchange: Smart & Sustainable Gear Sharing:

If your son has outgrown Mowglis uniform items (aka Mow-Trow) that are still in good shape, please add them to this spreadsheet. If you’re looking for Mow-Trow or other gear (hiking boots, backpacks, etc.), you can check out this spreadsheet, and if you find what you’re looking for, contact the parent who posted it up and either arrange for shipping (or to pick it up if you live in the same area).

The best way to pay for shipping will be for the family with the items to box them up and bring them to a UPS Store and have the parent receiving the items call the store with their credit card number. That is how we send lost and found items at the end of the summer, and it works quite well. Please note when items have been claimed once they have been. Any unclaimed items can be brought to camp on arrival day or shipped to camp.

Keeping Campers Safe: Our Tick Management Approach:

How do you manage the threat of ticks?

While we have fewer ticks in NH than in more southern New England states, we still take ticks extremely seriously.

Here are some big-picture ways we protect our campers from ticks:

  • Our defense starts with staff education – all campers and counselors are taught what, where, and when to look for, and we have the campers do tick checks at least daily and every time they’ve been out in the bushes.
  • If a tick is found embedded on a camper while at camp, he will go to the nurse for removal and bite-site mapping, and then the tick is saved, and the camper will be monitored daily for any signs of infection.
  • If there is a parental desire or signs of infection, the tick is sent to a lab for testing.
  • We have bottles of bug spray throughout camp and on all trips.
  • We cut back brush to minimize the chance of ticks hopping onto folks as they walk around camp.
